DSP Audio Effects: Gain/Clipper

This library guide offers a comprehensive introduction to audio effects (FX) processing—also known as audio signal processing—which can occur in either analog or digital form. Given the widespread use and affordability of digital technologies, the focus h

Definition

Gain refers to the amount of amplification applied to an audio signal, typically measured in decibels (dB). It represents the difference in signal strength between the input and output of an audio device or circuit. It's important to distinguish gain from volume. While gain controls the strength of the input signal, volume adjusts the output level delivered to the listener. In practical terms, increasing gain amplifies the signal before it undergoes processing, whereas adjusting volume changes how loud the final output sounds without altering the signal's initial strength.
