Assessment in Action: Critical Thinking & Information Literacy: About

This guide is a companion to Assessment in Action (AiA) poster presentation at the American Library Association Annual Conference 2015.

Overview

Student work from two sections of LBMD 2001 in Fall 2014 were used for this project.  TRAILS 12th Grade General Assessment #1 was given as a pre and post-test.  The rubric for the final project was created with the English faculty team member.  It was designed to measure students' ability to use information literacy skills and critical thinking to find, evaluate, and use a variety of resources to support a specific thesis.  They did this in four parts.  Below are the materials and more detail about the components of the curriculum and tools.

Introduction to Library Resources LBMD 2001

This is a one credit-hour course taken by students at all different undergraduate levels and a wide variety of majors. It is an elective but is required by the Parks & Recreation Administration Program. The course is part of the Curriculum & Instruction department within the College of Education.  The objectives of this course are based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (2000).  The format of the course was a flipped classroom approach.  Students were to prepare for each week's face-to-face 50 minute class by completing the activities in the Blackboard shell.  Class time was used for hands-on activities related to that material.  The final project was a demonstration of student application of IL skills and critical thinking practiced throughout the course.

TRAILS

TRAILS is the Tool for Real-time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills, a project of Kent State University Libraries.  It is a free multi-choice assessment for 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th grade.  We used the 12th grade General Assessment #1.  There are two versions of a 30 question test that include 6 questions related to each of the five IL standards.  There is also an option to choose a 6 question assessment of an isolated skill.
