Based on a true story, the film describes how L.A.'s public schools treat Mexican-American students in 1968, with a mixture of negligence, apathy, and occasional cruelty. Graduation rates are low, students caught speaking Spanish in class are paddled on the spot, they are denied access to bathrooms at lunch. Paula Crisostomo is smart and gets good grades, but when she attends a student leadership conference at a wealthy Westside facility, she begins to see the bigger cultural picture. With inspiration from a sympathetic young teacher, Sal Castro, Paula becomes a major force in organizing huge walkouts from five East L.A. schools.Based on true events, honor student Paula Crisostomo organizes a peaceful walkout to protest discrimination against Mexican-Americans in her school system.

Quinceañera is a look at what happens when teenage sexuality, age-old rituals, and real estate prices collide. It is a story fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino neighborhood in transition. Magdelena (Emily Rios) is the daughter of a Mexican-American family who runs a storefront church in Echo Park, Los Angeles. With her fifteenth birthday approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend, her Quinceañera dress, and the Hummer Limo she hopes will carry her on her special day. But a few months before the celebration, Magdelena falls pregnant. As the eleborate preparations for her Quinceañera proceed, it's only a matter of time before her religious father finds out and rejects her. Forced out of her home, Magdalena moves in with her great-great uncle Tomas (Chalo Gonzalez), and old man who makes his living selling champurrado (a Mexican hot drink) in the street. Already living with him is Carlos (Jesse Garcia), Magdelena's cousin, a tough cholo who was thrown out by his parents. Carlos does not disguise his disapproval of Magdelena's arrival. The back house rental where Tomas has lived happily for many years is on a property that was recently purchased by an affluent white gay couple (David W. Ross and Jason L. Wood) -- pioneers of gentrification in the neighborhood. Inevitably, worlds collide when they become entangled in the lives of their tenants. As Magdelena's pregnancy grows more visible, she, Carlos, and Tomas pull together as a family of outsiders. But the economics of the neighborhood are turning against them. Ultimately, this precipitates a crisis that threatens their way of life.

Dubbed "King Tiger" and "the Malcolm X of the Chicano Movement," Reies López Tijerina inspired Mexican-American college students of the late 1960s and early 1970s to start the Chicano Civil Rights Movement that stressed ethnic pride, ethnic studies, and opposition to police brutality. The Chicano movement eventually faded away, but at the time of the production of this film, King Tiger was alive, living in Mexico, and wanting to tell his story.

What if we could change the world by changing the way babies are born? Shot in El Paso, Texas, CATCHING BABIES tells the stories of mothers and midwives on the journey to bring life into the world. Kennasha, Jessica, Diana, and Sandra are struggling through one of the most demanding schools of midwifery in the country, Maternidad La Luz Birth Center and School, a school designed to be challenging in order to push women to understand their own strength. As the women juggle their rigorous academic struggles, they must also provide quality health care to mothers and babies. Founded in 1987, Maternidad La Luz provides natural birth options at a low cost to Mexican and Mexican American women and their families. This birth center offers services in Spanish and English and welcomes families from El Paso, but also from Juarez, Mexico. In the U.S. the use of midwives and home births has doubled since 2000. In this birthing experience, the mother's body leads the process while the midwife supports the mother. Families can create the loving, non-clinical environment that is right for them and enjoy a birth option that is statistically safer than hospital births. CATCHING BABIES takes viewers into intimate spaces by using close-up shots and the ambient sounds of bustling households. The midwives narrate the happenings of the clinic on-camera as they perform the meaningful work of supporting women through the most important moments of their lives. Watch the sister-midwives as they live and learn in this transformative place which gives birth to babies, mothers and midwives.
